The Harmelia Gardens Scout Group was established in 1969.
In 1982, the Group consisted of two Cub Packs (Mohawks and Apaches) and had one Scout Troop. Members met at the home of Deon Doubell and later moved to be located within the grounds of Hurlyvale School.
During 1984 the Illionglen Scout Group merged with Harmelia to strengthen numbers and form one Group. The Cub Pack names were changed to “Pelicans” and “Woodpeckers”.
The first Harmelia Scout to attain the highest Scout award was Iain Lochore. This was in 1982.
In 1986 the current Scout hall became a reality and then in 1991, the group became known as an “Air Scout” group as the Scout Master (Niel Harvey) had experience as an aircraft pilot.
Cubs & Scouts follow a common training curriculum as used by all other Scout Groups. Air Scouts however the option of earning “air related” badges such as the advancemet level of Air Explorer. This requires the Scout to pass an Air Navigator and Air traffic Controller badge. Other interest badges include “Space Explorer” and “Model Aero Engineer”.
